An Exciting Announcement

For three and a half years, I've been 'The Awkward Photographer'. And, it's time for a change.

I'd like to introduce you to: Jenna Lee Photography. Same girl, less awkward.

Here are a few more thoughts about this change.

If you've previously followed me on Facebook, you can find my new page here.

Sullivan

Soon after my session with Judah, I found myself playing peek-a-boo with his cousin.

I've photographed Sullivan since he was 3 months old, but every time I show up at his house, it takes a some time for him to warm up to me. When he does though, his sweet little voice and sly peeks to make sure I'm following him are well worth the wait.

In the near future, Sullivan will have a little sister. In the meantime, it seems he thinks there is a baby in everybody's tummy. Too cute!

Judah

This was my second session with the E. family and little Judah. While he has grown and changed in the last few months, that distinctive smile is still there.

Sessions with toddlers are always a challenge, but it's a great opportunity to be flexible. And, in being flexible, I often stumble upon photos that weren't what I planned but are perfect as they are. That's how I feel about this session. There are moments where he is looking as his parents with such trust... or I happened to catch his gaze... When reviewing what ended up on my memory card, these photos made me sigh. Content.

After the session, I had some time before I had to leave. So, Judah's parents and I sat in their living room, ate some cheese and crackers, and discussed our favorite 'fake' flavors (mine: blue razzberry and cotton candy) and tried to figure out how to make our own essential oils. I thoroughly enjoyed the conversation.

Okay, enough talking. Get ready to smile at this little one's grin. DSC08709 DSC08716 Judah2 DSC08738 2 DSC08750 DSC08763 Judah3 DSC08815 DSC08816 2 Judah4 DSC08849 Judah5 Judah6 DSC08918 Judah7 Judah8 DSC08976 DSC08999 2 DSC09055 Judah10 DSC09059 DSC09064 DSC09068 DSC09071

Birth stories {Personal}

I have a fascination with photographed birth stories.

Though I would hardly describe them as a 'trend', they do seem to be the most recent offering of photographers, who document the birthing process artistically from start to finish. I haven't done one myself yet, but it's something that I'd like to do.

I attended a birth once - A friend whom I babysat for when I was in my teens. It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life.

The smell of hospitals unnerves me. I expected to feel faint. But, when that little one made his entrance, I was transfixed. I sat there at the foot of the bed and tears began to fall. 'The miracle of life' is a phrase that we hear often. But it's true.

Life is a miracle.

And it just struck me... how amazing it is that these children will have photos from the day that they were born. Not just a snapshot here and there. But documentation. A story.

Their story.

And that is why I take pictures.

Below: a special photo of my dad and I. These everyday moments are precious.

A Restful Bloom

My Nana's Hoya {Personal}

My hoya is just starting to bloom.

It's gorgeous, my favorite. And it's not because the pink blooms are delicate and cheery or due to the hardiness of this tropical plant. It's because of the history.

My Nana gave me this plant several years ago. It had come from a start from another plant, but she told me it was about 40 years old. It had been hanging in her kitchen window.

For most of my life, my grandparents lived on Lake Sammamish. I have fond memories of jumping off the end of the dock, feeding the ducks and eating my Nana's delicious macaroni salad while perched on the edge of a lawn chair.

She told me how to care for it, emphasizing that I should never cut the flowers off. If I did, it wouldn't bloom again.

I was delighted to add it to my collection of indoor greenery. Now it hangs in my kitchen.

When she died last year, this plant became even more precious. I carefully observe the delicate tendrils that proclaim new growth. I take note of any yellowing leaves. I dance in my kitchen when I see the first glimpse of a grouping of blossoms.

It reminds me of her. NanaHoya

Passenger Side at the Jewelbox Theater, Seattle

I recently went and saw one half of Passenger Side play. Last week, I had the privilege of seeing them as a whole at the Jewelbox Theater at Rendezvous in Seattle!

It was a great show, and their fan base was quite supportive - we nearly filled the small venue.

I recorded a few snippets, including the audio below from my current favorite song that they play. I love how they get the audience involved! (Note: We get kind of crazy with the applause at the end. Watch your ears.)

Passenger Side is: Dustin and Brandon

Follow them on Facebook or Twitter to get news of their upcoming shows!
